Beer Description
Avery Brewing has produced a good number of very unique beers in the last few years. They have embraced the custom craft brew trends very hard. This particular beer is on the higher end of the Avery Brewing price points, at around 13 dollars. Tweak is a bourbon-barrel aged stout infused with coffee.
Our very own Parker, of the cartoon and cat loving variety, created this cult classic character back in our 17th season. Appearing in several episodes under another stage name that was deemed inappropriate, our executive producers and editors decided that a name change and further character development— a 4-month hiatus in Bourbon barrels—were necessary to satisfy our most ardent and demanding viewers.
ABV: 16%
Best served: In a snifter or goblet, at about 50-60 F.
Beer Review
This beer is no joke. It’s not for the faint of heart. However, if you like stout and like bourbon, you are going to LOVE this beer.
The aroma was hard to pinpoint at first, I believe because of the type of Belgian yeast used. It’s definitely a unique combination but not all yeast strains are capable of surviving a 16% alcohol content. It adds a very Belgian style aroma to the beer but is not overpowering. The second scent is malt and a strong bourbon barrel aroma.
The taste is even more packed with that bourbon barrel flavor. It’s not just a hint of it but an absolute immersion of the flavors. The Belgian flavors also come through, followed by an ever-so-slight coffee flavor. The coffee is faint at best and the bitterness of this beer is very slight. It’s not a hoppy variety. It is sweet and creamy and rich. I’ve described these types of beers before as a warm blanket before but this is more like an electric blanket. I could drink this on any cold winter day.
My only caution would be for those who do not enjoy the strong bourbon-barrel flavors. I know some people prefer a hint of it, not a smack in the face. However, if is this beer gives me a slap I am definitely turning the other cheek.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: Belgian style scent with bourbon.
Taste: The taste is very similar to the aroma but sweet and rich.
Texture: A tall and stiff head with a stick to the glass foam.
Finish: The finish is very sweet with the bourbon-barrel as the alpha and omega of the flavor profile.
